Plagiarism Guidelines | Uniform Requirements
Assignments, Grading, and Tutor Expectations
- Tutors should issue a grade two weeks following each quarter.
- Following the second quarter, tutors should issue both a second quarter and first semester grade.
- Following the fourth quarter, tutors should issue both a fourth quarter and second semester grade.
- Tutors should issue a numeric grade.
- The standard Mars Hill equivalence grades are: A (100-90), B (89-80), C (79-70), D (69-60), F (59-0)
- Students will have work for Mars Hill every week in every class. Tutors will assign all work for the week by 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. If work has not been assigned by 8:00 Tuesday morning, it is the student’s responsibility to clarify whether work has been assigned.
- Tutors will return graded work within two weeks. If a teacher fails to return work within this timeline, it is the parent’s responsibility to contact the tutor or Mr. Hughes.
- Tutors who need to be absent from their Monday class will make arrangements for a substitute teacher or communicate a class time plan to students/parents and on-site supervisors ahead of time. In the case of an unforeseen emergency, on-site supervisors will determine how students will use class time.
- Email correspondence between students and tutors must include parents as well.
On-Campus Policies
- Once on campus and during class periods, students must remain either in class or in a designated “free” or “study” area at all times.
- Students may not leave campus until the end of their school day unless for a specified, pre-approved reason (doctor’s appointment, dual credit class, etc.)
- Tutors should dismiss class five minutes prior to the start of the next class period
- In between classes, students should remain quiet and respectful. If a class ends early, students should remain in their current classroom until the class period ends (i.e. five minutes prior to the next class period).
- Students should be on time for their classes and waiting in their seats for their tutors. They should use the restroom in between classes if at all possible, and make every effort to bring all class materials with them (books, paper, pens, etc.)
- Free areas include the downstairs Fellowship hall/lunch room and the front porch area.
- Study areas include the chapel and Mars Hill classrooms not currently in use. Study areas are for silent, individual studying or reading only, and may not be used for hanging out, talking, or group study.
- Students may not congregate in the parking lot or in vehicles, or gather in other areas of the building (stairwells, nursery, etc.)
- Open hours occur during the class periods when a student does not have a scheduled class. Students may use one of these hours at their own discretion (a “free hour”) in designated free areas (see above). Any additional open hours must be used as a “study hour,” i.e. for personal study, reading, or homework. If students would like to study together, that must be done during their “free hour” in a designated “free” area. Parents should discuss non-class hours with students ahead of time and set expectations that best suit each student.
- After chapel and during the lunch period, students may gather in any free area, but food must be stored and eaten in the lunch room only. No eating anywhere else inside (or outside) the building.
- Uniform: Students should strive to be in full uniform compliance throughout the school day. A student who is found out of compliance with the uniform without a parental excuse will be asked to contact a parent to bring the missing part of their uniform.
- Phones, tablets, and laptops must be kept in the designated device area for the entirety of the school day, and may only be used for essential needs for and as briefly as possible. Use of phones for recording a class must be cleared with the tutor and an on-site supervisor ahead of time. If extended device usage is necessary for some other specific purpose during a school day, it must be requested by parents ahead of time and must occur only in quiet study areas away from other students.
- To maintain personal hygiene, professionalism, and common courtesy, during school hours students will refrain from vigorous recreational activities or sports on campus.
Excellence & Professionalism
- Late Work: Students (and parents) are expected to diligently honor all assignment due dates, asking for excuses only for reasons generally honored in academic and professional settings. These would include serious illness, death in the family, and pre-planned vacation. For illness and bereavement, assignments will be accepted one week late with a note from a parent.
- Printer and Computer Issues: These are not considered a legitimate excuse. In the case of such incidents, homework must be sent digitally before class (via email), or if a digital transfer is not possible, a parent must contact the tutor before class to verify that the assignment is in its completed state, pending the resolution of the computer issue. In either case, a hard copy must be delivered to tutors by Wednesday of the same week.
- Respect: Students will treat tutors with a high level of respect. Students are to end all conversation when a tutor enters the classroom, and are expected to address tutors with the appropriate salutation (Mr./Ms./Mrs./Dr./Pastor). Outside of prescribed discussion time, students will refrain from speaking in class before raising their hand and being called on by the tutor. Students will stand when tutors enter the classroom and wait for the tutor to greet them.
- Honesty: Students who are caught cheating once receive an F on the assignment and repeat classwork for that quarter. Students caught cheating a second time are suspended for one semester and given an opportunity to reapply. Plagiarism/use of generative AI is handled in the same way as cheating.
Community Standards (The “5 G’s”)
Five behaviors that that drag the Mars Hill community down (And their opposites):
- Goofiness (Our aim is sober-minded self-control)
- Grouping Off (Our aim is unconditional love, impartiality, and hospitality)
- Guy/Girl Drama (Our aim is to be brothers and sisters in Christ in all purity)
- Gossip (Our aim is honoring and covering one another)
- Grumbling (Our aim is gratitude, humility, and respect for authority)
Academic Probation
- Parents should monitor their students’ grades each quarter to make sure they are completing their course work to an acceptable standard
- Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 for a semester, or who receive a quarterly grade of D or lower in any single class are placed on academic probation (Grade point equivalents: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0)

Graduation & Diplomas
- Mars Hill keeps no official transcripts or centralized academic records, and graduates technically remain homeschooled students all the way through. However, we do issue Mars Hill diplomas in recognition of the unique achievement of students who fully give themselves to the Mars Hill course of study and tutelage, and remain in good standing.
- In order for students to receive a Mars Hill diploma and be recognized at graduation , parents must use Mars Hill-issued grades on their official home school transcripts. Otherwise parents are free to issue their own homeschool’s grades.
- Also, for a Mars Hill diploma, students must have completed more than 15 of their high school credits at Mars Hill.
- We ask that students who want to walk in the Mars Hill graduation ceremony make it their only graduation ceremony.
